Abel Janszoon Tasman was a Dutch seafarer and explorer who lived in the 17th century. He is best known for being the first European to sight the island of Tasmania, which was later named after him. Tasman also explored and mapped parts of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands during his voyages. His expeditions played a significant role in the European exploration and understanding of the South Pacific region.
