William III
William III, also known as William of Orange, was a Dutch prince who became King of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the late 17th century. He is best known for his role in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when he and his wife
Mary II ascended to the throne after the overthrow of King
James II.
William III is remembered for his efforts to promote religious tolerance and for his successful military campaigns, including the defeat of the deposed
James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. He reigned as co-monarch with
Mary II until her death in 1694, and then as sole monarch until his own death in 1702. His reign had a lasting impact on the constitutional and religious development of Britain and Ireland.
